Are music therapists really therapists?
Yes, music therapists are trained psychotherapists. I help people use their own creativity to examine their thoughts and behaviors from a new angle, and to make positive changes in their lives.

But I have no rhythm!
Music therapy is never about playing music “correctly.” Rather, we use music to experience and notice-- to really get deep down to the root of what's going on for you. People often need something beyond talking in order to fully understand a pattern, relationship, or emotion.

What does a music therapy session look like?
I meet with most clients at Inner Rhythms Music and Therapy Center, a spacious studio with a couch and lots of instruments. Sometimes we talk, sometimes we make music or listen, sometimes we use movement, and usually it's a combination of all of the above. Music therapy looks different for everyone, and sessions are based on your individual needs and goals. I also travel to private homes and organizations. **UPDATE: our physical location is closed, but virtual sessions are available!**

Who comes to music therapy?
Music therapists are trained to work with people of all ages who are seeking therapy for all sorts of concerns. Absolutely no musical experience is necessary. Many people I work with are seeking relief from depression, anxiety, and high stress, and most clients are simply looking to get unstuck from their old patterns. I also work with transgender and non-binary people, and those who are exploring their gender identity. Music therapy provides a safe, non-judgmental space to begin experiencing and owning your voice.

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program (American Music Therapy Association).
