
Julie Lipson, MA, MT-BC is a musician and board certified music therapist. After earning their Master’s from Drexel University, Julie opened their private practice, Inner Rhythms Music Therapy, serving individuals and groups, and specializing in working with clients who are exploring the connection between gender and the voice. Julie provides consultation for individuals and organizations and offers trainings on LGBTQ+ competency, private practice start up, and using creativity in therapy. Julie is a dynamic speaker, and focuses on a range of topics related to the voice (literal and metaphorical), creativity, and finding the authentic self. Julie has presented in a variety of settings, including the Philadelphia Trans Wellness Conference, the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, and New York City’s School of Visual Arts. Their chapter “Seeking the Uncensored Self: Music Therapy with Transgender Clients” was published in the 2019 book, Creative Arts Therapies and the LGBTQ Community: Theory and Practice, and their chapter “Trans and Nonbinary Community Vocal Workshops” is forthcoming in the Oxford Handbook of Queer and Trans Music Therapy (2023).
Julie is one half of Ants on a Log, a nationally acclaimed duo playing socially conscious music for children and other childlike people. In 2020, Julie produced the Trans & Nonbinary Kids Mix, which was featured widely in national media as a milestone in the world of intersectional children’s music. The album features Julie’s song “They’re My Best Friend,” which was the first song with all nonbinary pronouns to air on national radio. Julie also produces Practice Your Pronouns, a sing-along video series that promotes pronoun fluency and nonbinary visibility by switching pronouns in well-known songs.
Part of the founding team at Camp Aranu’tiq summer camp for transgender and nonbinary youth, Julie worked as Assistant Director for 12 years and now serves on the board. In 2021, Julie received a Leeway Foundation Transformation Award, recognizing artists who demonstrate a long-term commitment to social change work. In 2018 Julie was selected as one of Drexel’s “40 Under 40,” recognizing outstanding young alumni who are making a mark in their professions and community.
