Music Therapy for Elderly Loved Ones
I work with elder clients for many reasons. Some people are interested in maintaining healthy brain functions while aging. Others are experiencing dementia or other conditions where expression is becoming less accessible. I enjoy working with aging clients and their caregivers to find ways to address a variety of goals through creativity and compassion. Please contact me to discuss if music therapy may be a good fit for you or your loved one. Below is more information on what music therapy can provide.
Stimulate the Brain
Music therapy is used to treat dementia, stroke, and other conditions that respond well to cognitive stimulation. Because music engages both sides of the brain, music is used to “rewire” brain connections and improve brain functions that have been damaged.
Language and Expression
Many elders who have lost skills such as language and emotion are able to function at a higher level during music therapy. Through singing, listening, and live music making, many are able to express emotions and thoughts in ways that may now be difficult verbally.
Quality of Life
Elders become isolated for many reasons, including inability to leave the home and difficulty connecting with family and friends. Music therapy helps to increase social connections and decrease feelings of loneliness, isolation, and depression.
